NEFES AL NEFES VER / INHALE EXHALE

“Nefes Al Nefes Ver” (2021), çekimlerini İstanbul’da deniz kıyısında, yüzyıllardır ekonomik faaliyetlerin, şehir içi ulaşımın ve sosyal statü mücadelelerinin merkezinde yer alan bir kamusal alanda yaptım. Bu alanı var eden fiziksel varlıkları, görsel bir filtre gibi çalışan metal tülün içinden hem somut maddeler hem de soyut görüntüler olarak fotoğraflamak istedim. Işığın fotoğraf yüzeyinde oluşturduğu alanlar, çıplak gözle bakıldığında görünmeyen kütlelerin belirmesini mümkün kılabiliyor. Görünen ve görünmeyen arasındaki bu dinamiğe odaklanıp mekânı soyutlaştırmak, onu çok daha büyük bir bütünün içinde yeniden görmemi sağlıyor.

Metal tül 1990’dan bu yana fotoğraflarımda kullandığım bir unsur oldu. Bibliotheque National de France koleksiyonunda da bulunan Chrysalide serisinde metal tülü figürün konturlarını belirsizleştirmek için kullanmıştım. 2020 tarihli “Işık Etüdü-I” isimli sergimde ise aynı objeyi natürmort kompozisyonlarıma yeni bir katman olarak ekledim. Fotoğraflarımda en başından beri ışığa; ışığın nasıl yayıldığına, yansıdığına ve dönüştüğüne odaklandım. Metal tül de ışığa müdahale eden yapısıyla her zaman ilgilendiğim bir nesne oldu.   

Yakın zamanda işlerimi etrafında kurduğum çeşitli nesneler hem içerdikleri hem de çevreledikleri boşluğa işaret ediyorlar. Yeni Doğmuş serimdeki baloncuklar ve “Nefes Al Nefes Ver” işimde yeniden ele aldığım metal tül gibi... Boşluğu içine hapseden, kapsayan veya geçirgen dokularıyla boşluğun içinde yüzen bu nesnelere, şimdi de yıllar önce bambaşka bir gözle karakalem olarak çizdiğim kova eklendi. “Yeni Doğmuş” serimdeki baloncukları “uzun ömürlü soyut objeler” olarak tanımlamıştım, “Nefes Al Nefes Ver” serimdeki metal tül de boşluğu kesin sınırlarla bölmeden dönüştürüyordu. Kova ise işlerimin merkezine koyduğum nesneler arasında boşluğu tutan ve hacmi gösteren en somut form.

“INHALE EXHALE” / “NEFES AL NEFES VER”

I did the photoshoot for Inhale Exhale (2021) at a public space, the seashore of İstanbul which is located in the center of economic activities, urban transportation routes, and social status struggles for centuries. Across a metal net that works like a visual filter, I wanted to photograph the physical entities that make this space, both as concrete materials and also as abstract images. If one looks with the naked eye, the fields formed by light on the surface of the photograph might facilitate the appearance of previously invisible masses. Abstracting the space by focusing on this dynamic between the visible and invisible, helps me to see that space again within a much larger whole.     

Using metal nets is an aspect of my photography since 1990. I used the metal net to blur the contours of the figure in my Chrysalide series which is featured in the Collection of Bibliotheque National de France. In my exhibition titled “Light Study-I” (2020), I added this same object as a new layer to my still-life compositions. From the beginning of my career as a photographer, I focused on the light itself, and the way it propagates, diffuses, as well as transforms. Metal net has always been an object of interest for me due to its structure that changes light.     

Various objects around which I structured my recent works refer to a void both they encompass and also, they encircle. As is the case with the bubbles in my New Born series and the metal net I reconsidered in my work titled Inhale Exhale… To these objects which lock in the void or float in it with their porous textures a new one has been added, the bucket that I drew in charcoal years ago with a completely different outlook. I had defined the bubbles in my New Born series as “durable abstract objects”. The metal net in Inhale Exhale too was transforming the void without partitioning it. Among all these objects which are placed at the center of my works, the bucket is the most solid form that shields the void and reveals the volume.
